Programs & Activities
Dream It, Be It – Career Support for Girls
Targets girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. It provides girls with access to professional role models, career education, and resources to live their dreams. Career support includes help and assistance to pursue an occupation that will offer opportunities for long-term success. Although we don’t think all girls will know what they want to do for the rest of their lives, the skills they learn in Dream It, Be It will help them regardless of the career they choose to pursue or when they choose to pursue it.
Fair View High Project
Works with the school administration to determine the general and scholarship needs of the students and the school. Support includes transportation vouchers, donations of clothing and food, scholarships, and gifts/party for graduating seniors.
Live Your Dream Awards
Assists women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the financial resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. Each year, more than $1.6 million in education grants are awarded to more than 1,200 women, many of whom have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, domestic violence and/or drug and alcohol abuse. Live Your Dream Awards recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition, and transportation. The Live Your Dream Awards involves three levels of cash awards. The program begins at the local Soroptimist club-level, where award amounts vary. Local-level award recipients then become eligible for region-level awards of either $3,000 or $5,000. Region-level award recipients then become eligible to receive one of three international-level awards of $10,000.
Santa and Local Women’s Holiday Projects
A community event in December for children and families in the Chico community. Provides a visit and photo with Santa along with arts and crafts, snacks, and gifts (books, mittens, hats, stuffed toys, coloring books and crayons, etc.). The Local Women’s Holiday Project includes bell ringing, food drives, and gifts for woman at local shelters.
Stop Human Trafficking Project
Human trafficking is lucrative business in the Chico community and worldwide, more so than selling arms and drugs. The average age when a child is forced or coerced into Sex Trafficking is 12-14 years of age. Traffickers prey on the vulnerable that can be lost in the foster system, a runaway or under the control of a “boyfriend.” This project aims to raise public awareness and support to victims. Support includes Stop Human Trafficking signs at bus stops, coffee shops, and other local businesses, backpacks filled with necessities at Enloe Hospital for victims, and more. There is an annual 5K Run each spring at Bidwell Park to raise awareness and funds to support this project.
